πŸ‘‘ Impeachment - Barrel-Aged Russian Imperial Stout

An intense, monumental, and iconic beer. Impeachment is one of the greatest expressions of The Nose Mustache brewery's High End line. The result of extreme brewing engineering and impeccable patience, this liquid jewel challenges the limits of potency and complexity, delivering an unforgettable and historic sensory experience.

πŸ“š The Style: The Beer of the Czars

The Russian Imperial Stout (RIS) style was born in 18th-century England. It was specifically created to withstand the long, cold voyages across the Baltic Sea to the Russian court, becoming Empress Catherine the Great's favorite drink.

To survive the journey without freezing or spoiling, London brewers substantially increased the alcohol content and the hop and dark malt load of the recipe. The historical result is a style known for its opaque black color, extremely dense body, and deep notes reminiscent of coffee, dark chocolate, and dark dried fruits.

πŸ§ͺ The Historical Process and the Journey of Time

The creation of Impeachment is a true technical epic that began at a significant moment in our recent history:

  • ⛓️ The Parti-Gyle Method: This RIS was crafted using the traditional and rare parti-gyle process. This means that only the first wort extraction (the densest and sweetest "heart" of the grains) was used, without rinsing the malts. An intense and extremely concentrated mash to extract maximum potency.

  • ⏳ The Power of Time: The mash took place in April 2020, at the beginning of the pandemic. It took a long 90 days of primary fermentation alone for complete extract stabilization, resulting in an impressive 15.3% alcohol content perfectly integrated.

  • πŸͺ΅ The Barrel Blend: After fermentation, the liquid began a patient journey of wood aging. A meticulous blend was designed, composed of 70% French oak and 30% American oak, imparting three-dimensional layers of depth and character to the beer.

πŸ‘οΈ Sensory Cues: What to expect in the glass?

  • Appearance: A completely black, viscous, and dense beer that moves in the glass like liqueur. It forms a dark brown, persistent head.

  • Aroma: A complex explosion. American oak delivers striking notes of vanilla and coconut, while French oak brings sophistication, nuances of spice, and tannic structure. In the background, a solid base of dark chocolate, cocoa, espresso, and stewed plums.

  • Palate: On the first sip, an assertive acidity with a medium body is revealed, and different layers of flavor bring toasted coconut, licorice, 75% bean-to-bar chocolate, and vinous notes. The alcoholic warmth is noble and comforting, balanced by the bitterness of roasted malts and the complexity of the wood. The finish is infinitely long and remarkable.

🍽️ Tasting and Serving Guide

As an extreme beer, the correct service resembles that of a great Port wine or Cognac:

  • 🌑️ Ideal Temperature: It should be served between 12Β°C and 15Β°C (cellar temperature). If served too cold, the cold numbs the complex aromas and accentuates the bitterness of the roast. Let the beer warm slowly in the glass to observe its evolution.

  • 🍺 Suggested Glass: Snifter Glass. The wide bowl allows you to cup the glass with your hands, gently transferring heat to the liquid, while the narrow mouth concentrates the impressive aromatic potency.

🍫 Pairing Suggestions

  1. Intense Chocolate-Based Desserts: Dark Belgian chocolate Petit GΓ’teau or chocolate fondue with strawberries. The beer's sweetness and bitterness provide a molecular embrace to the chocolate, while the 15.3% alcohol cuts through the dessert's density.

  2. Cigars and Moments of Reflection: Impeachment is the perfect partner for a high-quality cigar (such as a legitimate Cohiba or Romeo y Julieta). The notes of leather, tobacco, and wood from the cigar directly echo the beer's oak blend.

  3. Very Intense Blue Cheeses: Authentic Roquefort cheese or Stilton. The pronounced saltiness and animal profile of these cheeses create a spectacular and classic contrast with the residual malt sweetness and the beer's fruity and liqueur-like profile.
